After finishing school, I realized that I would have to try to sell my work if I wanted to be a working artist. The probability of selling large-ish feminist artwork, not to mention sculpture – which is a difficult thing to market anyway – seemed doubtful. I decided to try my hand at functional art. Lighting, to be precise. After all, I had used many functional objects in my pieces. And I had also used light in a few. True to my vision, I decided to continue to work with found objects and also to stick with feminist themes by working with traditional

“women’s work”-related products.

I got interested in the way the light reacted on the pieces themselves or on the surfaces around them, i.e. the wall, floor or table top. The objects were still exciting, although my overriding interest was becoming much more one of design rather than of dogma. I was getting a feel for the quality of the light and choosing my palette of materials based on how the light would be impacted and how its environment would, too. Also, when I started making sculpture way back when, I was interested in a kind of force of will, in the sense that I physically carved into, shaped and altered the materials into what I wanted them to become. Many people who work with found objects are thrilled with the individual pieces and want those elements to be always obvious. I probably started out doing the same thing but now I was enjoying the concept of altering something by context alone. No longer imposing physical  force to make another thing out of something, I was putting one object in relation or juxtaposition to another object, therefore changing its context and, also, its meaning and sometimes causing it to lose its recognizability.

To transform by context.

My earlier work had been undeniably figurative.  The direction now seemed almost abstract in comparison, although I would argue that many of these pieces, despite their smaller scale, were figurative in an anthropomorphic way. Objects, for me, were always loaded with human qualities because of their associations  but also because of their form and spatial qualities. Some of  the lighted pieces were more directly figural.
